Tecumseh - Notable Native Americans
Tecumseh was a Shawnee chief, orator, war leader, and advocate of intertribal Indian alliances who directed Native resistance to European and European-American rule in the Ohio River valley. He led one of the most successful confederations of Tribal Nations during westward expansion, making journeys across a vast area of the modern Eastern United States to convince a multitude of Nations to join his resistance in Prophetstown (in modern day Indiana). Born into a time of intense turmoil, disease and land loss for his people, Tecumseh rose from warrior to Chief, taking part in multiple battles against American forces. He was a persuasive orator, and is one of the most oft-quoted Native Americans of North America. He argued that what had happened to many Tribes along the Eastern Seaboard was bound to happen to the Inland Tribes if Native people did not unite and resist. He pursued this hope of protecting his people's land until his death at the Battle of the Thames in 1813. To this day, he is widely regarded by both Native and non-Native people alike.
