Forced Relocations of Tribal Nations to Oklahoma - 24"x36"
This map presents dozens of Native American Nations who wound up In Indian Territory - later to be called Oklahoma - and shows the pathways they were forced upon from their original homelands. It also shows 6 Tribes that traditionally had part of their homelands contained within present Oklahoma who still reside in the state today.
Every Tribal Nation has their own name for the trail that they embarked upon to arrive in Oklahoma. Whether called "The Trail of Tears", "The Death March", the "Forced March" and so on, countless tens of thousands of Native Americans died en route to the state that currently has the highest number of Native people in the United States.
Within the 39 federally-recognized Tribes that call Oklahoma home, descendants of over 195 Tribes reside. (Many Nations who lost high populations due to warfare and disease amalgamated and merged in with larger Tribes.)
